Who is Noel Tata and What Could His Leadership Mean For The Tata Group
Noel Tata has emerged as one of the frontrunners to lead Tata Trusts following the sudden demise of former Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata. Noel is the son of Naval H. Tata and Simone N.Tata and also the half brother of Ratan Tata. Currently, a meeting is underway and Tata Trusts is expected to appoint Noel to take charge of the philanthropic arm.
As of now, Noel Tata is the trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Both hold close to 66% stake in Tata Sons, which is the holding company of Tata Group. The boards of Tata Trust are required to appoint a new chairman from the existing trustees because Ratan Tata did not name a successor before his death.
If at all Noel Tata is appointed as the Chairman of Tata Trusts, it’s likely to bode well with the stakeholders. The proposed move will also ensure that a member of the founding family leads the philanthropic arm, which contributed about $56 million (Rs 470 crore) as donations during FY23.
Who is Noel Tata?
After holding multiple positions across several Tata Group companies including Trent, Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation among many, Noel Tata currently serves as the Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Tata International Limited. Associated with the Tata Group for four decades, Noel was instrumental in steering the revenue growth of Tata International Limited which clocked a revenue of $500 million to over $3 billion. This significant growth took place when he served as the Managing Director of the company from August 2010 to November 2021.
Setting foot in the fashion space, Noel Tata was also instrumental in expanding the footprint of Trent Limited, where he served as the Managing Director (MD). As far as his education is concerned, Noel holds a degree from Sussex University (UK) and has completed the International Executive Programme (IEP) at INSEAD.
As a tradition, Chairmen of Tata have been from Parsi community. If Noel is appointed, he would become 11th chairman of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the sixth chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Interestingly, Noel Tata was in the cards to assume the chairmanship of Tata Sons, but was instead succeeded by Cyrus N Chandrasekaran, the then chief of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS),
Tata Group’s business empire is currently valued at $400 billion, where Ratan Tata played an instrumental role in making it a global powerhouse via a slew of marquee acquisitions.
The final rites of Ratan Tata were performed with full state honours, which was attended by family members including Noel Tata and various senior executives from the Tata Group.
Known for his low-profile leadership style, Noel Tata is recognised as a key member in the Tata Group. Since he took control of Trent Limited as its Chairman in 2014, the company saw a huge success in its operations, which helped its shares to surge over 6000% in the past decade.
Currently, Trent Group manages brands including Westside, Star Bazaar, and Zudio, in addition to global brands like Zara and Massimo Dutti. It reported a consolidated revenue of ₹12,669 crore in FY24. As of now, Noel holds key roles within the Tata Group.
